What is the Glowing Mushroom biome?
The Glowing Mushroom is Terraria’s luminous blue fungus biome — fields of mushroom grass growing on mud, giant glowing mushroom trees, and ambient enemies like Fungi Bulbs and Spore Bats. It exists in two forms that matter differently:
- Underground fields — natural pockets in the Underground and Cavern layers, available from world start. These are your source of Glowing Mushrooms (food-tier healing, potion ingredient) and Mushroom Grass Seeds.
- Surface mushroom biome — a player-made biome on the surface. This is the version that matters in Hardmode, because it’s the only place the Truffle NPC will live.
Glowing Mushroom grass never converts to Corruption, Crimson, or Hallow — it’s one of the few biomes that’s immune to infection, which makes it a surprisingly good quarantine wall.
How do you build a surface mushroom biome?
- Gather Mushroom Grass Seeds by cutting grass in an underground mushroom field (each stalk has a chance to drop seeds) — or buy them from the Dryad while she stands in a mushroom biome.
- On the surface, lay a pad of mud and plant the seeds — the biome registers once 100 mushroom-related tiles (mushroom grass plus plants) exist. The blue grass spreads across mud on its own — give it a few in-game days.
- Once the background shifts to the mushroom biome and the music changes, build a valid house (walls, door, table, chair, light) on or near the grass.
- In Hardmode, the Truffle will claim the house and open his shop.
The same process works underground to expand natural fields — useful for farming glowing mushrooms or Glowing Mushroom Seeds without touching the surface.
What does the Truffle sell — and why it matters
The Truffle is the payoff. His shop includes the Autohammer, the only crafting station that turns Chlorophyte Bars into Shroomite Bars — the material for Shroomite armor, the premier endgame ranger set before luminite gear. He also sells the Mushroom Spear (a strong pre-Plantera melee polearm), the Strange Glowing Mushroom (summons the Baby Truffle pet), Mushroom Cap vanity, and the Mushroom Pylon — one of the eleven pylons that power the teleport network.
Because his shop is mostly late-game material, the usual play is to build one small surface mushroom biome specifically to house him — our NPC unlock guide covers the full town roster, and NPC happiness explains why housing him with the right neighbors drops his prices.
Underground farming tips
- Glowing Mushrooms regrow on mushroom grass automatically — a small dedicated mud farm in the Cavern layer gives unlimited healing pickups and alchemy stock.
- The underground mushroom biome also grows Giant Glowing Mushrooms (the tree-like stalks) that drop mushroom wood — a free building material with a unique blue look.
- Mushroom fields are peaceful by Terraria standards: no infection, no evil enemies, and surface fields stay calm until Hardmode adds Truffle-themed wildlife like the Fungo Fish for anglers.
