FAQ

What should I do first in Terraria?
Chop trees with your axe for wood, kill a few slimes for gel, and build a sealed shelter — at least one room with player-placed background walls, a door, a table, a chair, and a light source — before the first night falls at 7:30 PM.
How do I get NPCs to move in?
Each town NPC needs their own valid house: an enclosed room with walls, a door or platforms, a light source, a flat surface, and a comfort item (chair). The Guide moves into your first valid house; the Merchant needs 50 silver coins; the Nurse needs you to have used a life crystal.
Corruption or Crimson — which evil biome should I pick?
Pick either — they are parallel content with different flavor. Corruption gives Demonite and the Eater of Worlds; Crimson gives Crimtane and the Brain of Cthulhu. Crimson gear is marginally stronger on paper, Corruption is the original classic. You can also let the world decide at random.

What do you do on day one?

Your first in-game day lasts about 15 real minutes — spend it entirely on wood and walls. Chop trees with the starting axe (aim for 200+ wood), kill slimes for gel to craft torches, and build a small sealed box: floor, walls, a door, and player-placed background walls — that’s what makes it a house and keeps enemies out. Put down a table, a chair, and a torch and the room is valid: the Guide will claim it, and he stays your free in-game hint system.

Build a second empty room immediately — NPCs each need their own house, and future arrivals (Merchant, Nurse, Demolitionist) move in only into valid vacant rooms.

How do you set up the crafting chain?

The station ladder is the skeleton of all Terraria progress:

  1. Work Bench (10 wood, by hand) — unlocks most furniture and early tools.
  2. Furnace (20 stone, 4 wood, 3 torches) — smelts ore into bars and makes glass.
  3. Iron/Lead Anvil (5 bars at a workbench) — forges metal weapons, armor, and tools.
  4. Place a second row as you grow: chest for storage, loom for banners, keg/cooking stations later.

Mine a shallow shaft near home for stone, copper/tin and iron/lead. Surface caves are enough for the first tier — you don’t need to reach the lava layer on day one.

How do you survive the first nights?

At 7:30 PM zombies and demon eyes arrive. If your shelter is done, stay inside and craft; if not, wall yourself into a hillside pocket with a torch. Early power moves:

  • Wooden sword → bow + arrows: a Wooden Bow with Flaming Arrows carries you through the first week.
  • Torches everywhere: light improves spawn visibility and NPC housing validity.
  • Life Crystals: heart-shaped crystals underground — smash them and use them; each adds 20 HP up to 400. Getting to 200 max HP is the line that starts attracting the Eye of Cthulhu.
  • Fall defense: craft a hook or ropes early; falls kill more beginners than zombies.

How does early progression actually work?

The intended staircase: surface caving → first ore tier (copper/tin → iron/lead → silver/tungsten → gold/platinum) → explore the evil biome (Corruption chasms or Crimson caverns) → smash Shadow Orbs or Crimson Hearts for a gun and meteor events → Eye of Cthulhu and the evil boss (Eater of Worlds or Brain of Cthulhu) → the Dungeon’s Skeletron → the Underworld and Hellstone gear → the Wall of Flesh that flips the world to Hardmode.

The Underground Hallow — crystalline caverns and much stronger enemies that appear once the Wall of Flesh falls

You don’t have to fight bosses on a timer — Terraria lets you prepare as long as you want. The boss order page maps every fight with HP by difficulty, and the class setups chart tells you exactly what to wear at each rung.
