FAQ

How do you summon Duke Fishron?
Fish in the Ocean biome with a Truffle Worm as bait. The worm is a rare glowing critter that spawns in underground Glowing Mushroom biomes during Hardmode — catch it with a Bug Net (it flees when approached, so use a Golden Bug Net or corner it). Cast into ocean water and Duke Fishron surfaces.
What is Duke Fishron's HP?
60,000 in Classic, 78,000 in Expert, and 99,000 in Master. He enters phase 2 at 50% health — a faster, darker form — and in Expert/Master adds a phase 3 at 15% health where he goes invisible between teleporting dash attacks.
What does Duke Fishron drop?
One of five weapons at 20% each — Tsunami, Bubble Gun, Razorblade Typhoon, Flairon, and Tempest Staff — plus Fishron Wings at 1/15, his mask and trophy, and in Expert a Treasure Bag containing the Shrimpy Truffle, a mount with huge speed boosts in water and low HP.
Can you fight Duke Fishron outside the ocean?
You can drag him inland but he enrages — gaining doubled defense and much more aggressive dash patterns. It's the classic hardcore challenge; the intended fight is at the ocean with a platform runway over the water.
When should you fight Duke Fishron?
He's balanced for post-Golem gear but summonable as soon as Hardmode starts — beating him early is the famous 'Fishron rush' that hands you post-Plantera-tier weapons while the mechanical bosses are still alive. Phase 3's invisibility makes him the hardest optional boss of that window.

Who is Duke Fishron?

Duke Fishron is Terraria’s great optional boss — a pig-fish-dragon hybrid who lives off the progression ladder entirely. He isn’t required to reach the Moon Lord, but his loot table is written in late-game ink: wings, mounts, and five weapons that embarrass the mechanical-boss tier. Catching him early is the game’s most famous power shortcut — the “Fishron rush.”

How do you summon him?

Duke Fishron has the strangest summon in the game: he’s fished up.

  1. Catch a Truffle Worm — a rare blue critter that spawns in underground Glowing Mushroom biomes in Hardmode. It burrows away when you get close — corner it in a dead end, or swing a Bug Net the moment it surfaces. The Golden Bug Net’s wider arc helps.
  2. Take it to the Ocean — either end of the world.
  3. Cast it as bait — the first bobber dip surfaces Duke Fishron instantly.

Any fishing rod works — the worm is bait, not a fish. Stockpile several; each cast costs one worm whether you win or wipe.

The three phases

Phase Trigger Behavior
1 Full HP Charging dashes in sets, Sharknado summons (spinning shark tornadoes that spawn Sharkrons), and homing Detonating Bubble sprays
2 50% HP Darker form — faster triple charges, then a bubble burst; Sharknadoes upgrade to Cthulhunadoes (bigger, faster)
3 (Expert/Master) 15% HP Pure rage: screen darkens, he teleports between single-attack charges — no bubbles, no pause, all aggression

The fight is fundamentally a dodge-the-dashes exam: every attack pattern begins with a telegraphed charge sequence, and the ocean gives you unlimited vertical runway. Build a long platform over the water, put a campfire and heart lanterns down, and fight him in the ocean — leaving the biome enrages him, doubling his defense and tightening the attack tempo.

What he drops — and why it’s worth dying for

  • Five 20% weapons: Tsunami (five-arrow bow, a ranger staple into endgame), Razorblade Typhoon (homing typhoon discs — possibly the best mage weapon pre-pillar), Bubble Gun, Flairon (the flail that spawns homing bubbles), and Tempest Staff (shark summon).
  • Fishron Wings (1/15) — the best wings available before the Celestial Pillars.
  • Shrimpy Truffle (Expert Treasure Bag) — a mount with fast ground/air movement and massive water boosts.
  • Mask, trophy, and the usual healing potions.

Because he’s summonable the moment Hardmode starts, killing him early rewrites the progression curve — our boss order shows where players usually slot the attempt, and the Hardmode guide covers what to have on hand before fishing him up.

Practical fight advice

  • Wide vertical dodges beat fast ones — every phase rewards big movement, not twitch jukes.
  • Kill the tornadoes when they spawn — Sharknadoes and Cthulhunadoes linger and spawn adds; a clean arena beats a full HP pool.
  • Phase 3 is rhythm — count his teleports: charge, pause, charge. He always telegraphs direction before launching; standing still between charges is death.
  • Watch your feet — falling in the water mid-fight removes your mobility right when he charges. The platform is the arena.
