FAQ

How many bosses are in Terraria?
Terraria has 33 bosses in total as of 1.4.5: 8 pre-Hardmode bosses, 10 Hardmode bosses, 14 event bosses, and Mechdusa, which only exists on the Get fixed boi secret seed.
Which Terraria bosses are optional?
King Slime, Queen Bee, Deerclops, Queen Slime, Duke Fishron, and Empress of Light are all optional — they drop strong loot but nothing required to advance progression. Every event boss and Mechdusa are optional too.
What boss should I fight first in Terraria?
The Eye of Cthulhu is designed as the first boss — it can spawn naturally once you have 200 health, 11 defense, and four town NPCs. King Slime is technically weaker and fine to farm first, but it is optional and drops no progression items.

Follow this progression line for the smoothest run. Bosses marked (optional) can be skipped without blocking anything:

Pre-Hardmode: King Slime (optional) → Eye of Cthulhu → Eater of Worlds (Corruption) or Brain of Cthulhu (Crimson) → Queen Bee (optional) → Skeletron → Deerclops (optional) → Wall of Flesh — defeating it permanently converts the world to Hardmode.

Hardmode: Queen Slime (optional) → The Twins / The Destroyer / Skeletron Prime (any order) → Plantera → Golem → Duke Fishron (optional) → Empress of Light (optional) → Lunatic Cultist → the four Celestial Pillars → Moon Lord.

How much HP does each pre-Hardmode boss have?

All values below are verified against the current 1.4.5.x data. Expert and Master modes raise boss health and damage sharply — pick your mode honestly.

Boss Classic Expert Master Required?
King Slime 2,000 2,800 3,570 Optional
Eye of Cthulhu 2,800 3,640 4,641 Effectively first
Eater of Worlds 10,050 15,120 19,296 Corruption worlds
Brain of Cthulhu 1,250 2,125 2,709 Crimson worlds
Queen Bee 3,400 4,760 6,069 Optional
Deerclops 7,000 11,900 15,172 Optional
Skeletron 4,400 8,800 11,220 Required (Dungeon)
Wall of Flesh 8,000 11,200 14,280 Required (Hardmode)

The Brain of Cthulhu has the lowest boss HP in the game — 1,250 on the brain itself, though its Creepers add another 2,000 to burn through first — and it is one of the very few bosses that still takes knockback. The Eater of Worlds’ total is split across dozens of segments, so piercing weapons shred it.

How much HP does each Hardmode boss have?

Boss Classic Expert Master Required?
Queen Slime 18,000 28,800 36,720 Optional
The Twins 43,000 total 64,500 82,238 Required (mech)
The Destroyer 80,000 120,000 153,000 Required (mech)
Skeletron Prime 28,000 head 42,000 53,550 Required (mech)
Plantera 30,000 42,000 53,550 Required
Golem 60,000 total 90,000 114,749 Required
Duke Fishron 60,000 78,000 99,450 Optional
Empress of Light 70,000 98,000 124,950 Optional
Lunatic Cultist 32,000 48,000 61,200 Required
Moon Lord 145,000 217,500 277,311 Final boss

Note the Twins list combined HP for both eyes (Retinazer 20,000/30,000/38,250 plus Spazmatism 23,000/34,500/43,988), and Skeletron Prime shows head HP — its four limbs raise the total to 59,000/88,500/112,836, but only the head must die.

Which bosses actually gate progression?

Only a handful of fights are hard progression gates:

  • Eater of Worlds / Brain of Cthulhu — their Shadow Scale / Tissue Sample drops unlock the tier of gear needed for the Dungeon.
  • Skeletron — killing it removes the Dungeon Guardians and grants real Dungeon access.
  • Wall of Flesh — its death permanently converts the world to Hardmode. There is no going back.
  • All three mechanical bosses — defeating them spawns Plantera’s Bulbs in the Underground Jungle.
  • Plantera — drops the Temple Key for the Jungle Temple and slows evil biome spread.
  • Golem — its death spawns the Lunatic Cultists at the Dungeon entrance.
  • Lunatic Cultist — starts the Lunar Events and Celestial Pillar chain.
  • Moon Lord — the end of the line; kills the run’s final boss and unlocks the crafting tier for the Zenith.

Event bosses (Pumpkin Moon, Frost Moon, Old One’s Army, Pirate and Martian invasions) and the secret-seed boss Mechdusa sit entirely outside this chain.

What gear should I have before each boss?

The short version: match your armor to the ore tier the previous boss unlocked. Eater/Brain tier (Shadow or Crimson armor) carries you through Skeletron; Molten armor is the pre-Hardmode ceiling for the Wall of Flesh. In Hardmode, break altars for ore progression, then fight one mechanical boss in Palladium/Cobalt-tier gear, upgrade with Hallowed Bars, and take Plantera in Hallowed or Chlorophyte. Our class setups guide maps the armor, weapon, and accessory choice for every stage — and the beginner guide covers everything before your first boss.
