What is the Dungeon?
The Dungeon is a single enormous brick labyrinth generated on either the far left or far right edge of every world, starting at a surface castle entrance and descending to near-Underworld depth. It is the only pre-Hardmode structure gated behind a boss: Skeletron must die before you can explore it safely.
Inside: skeletal enemies at spawn rates that climb the deeper you go, wired dart traps, cracked false floors, shelves of books and potions, and the best pre-Hardmode loot density in the game — plus the bound Mechanic, who becomes your wire-and-actuator vendor once you free her.
How do you unlock it?
The Old Man stands at the entrance. Talk to him at night and the dialog option Curse appears — picking it turns him into Skeletron. Beat Skeletron once and:
- The Dungeon opens permanently (he’ll never need re-killing).
- The Old Man takes residence as the Clothier NPC when a house is free.
- Cultists can later appear at the entrance once Golem is defeated — killing them summons the Lunatic Cultist and starts the endgame.
Descend to −3 depth (watch a Depth Meter — the music shift to the Dungeon track is your warning) before Skeletron dies and Dungeon Guardians spawn: skulls with 9,999 HP that kill most characters in one hit. Beating one drops only a Bone Key pet — the Dungeon itself stays locked.
What’s inside?
| Loot source | What you get |
|---|---|
| Locked Gold Chests (need Golden Keys) | Muramasa, Cobalt Shield, Aqua Scepter, Blue Moon, Magic Missile, Valor, Handgun, Shadow Key |
| Shelves | Books, Lesser Healing/Mana Potions, and the Water Bolt (blue book with yellow stripe) |
| Furniture & paintings | Dungeon-only sets, Alchemy Table, spike-lined false rooms |
| Biome Chests (post-Plantera, need Biome Keys) | One per major biome: Vampire Knives, Rainbow Gun, Scourge of the Corruptor, Piranha Gun, Desert Tiger Staff, Staff of the Frost Hydra — world-dependent |
| Bound NPC | The Mechanic, found and freed in the depths |
Golden Keys drop from Dungeon enemies and pots — you’ll leave with more than enough. Biome Chests are different: their keys drop at a 1/2500 rate from enemies in the matching biome during Hardmode (see evil biomes for farming context), and the chests refuse to open until Plantera is defeated even with the key in hand.
The Shadow Key found in a gold chest unlocks every Shadow Chest in the Underworld — one more reason a full clear pays off.
Post-Plantera Dungeon — three flavors
Once Plantera dies, the Dungeon escalates hard. Which enemies spawn depends on the background wall type your world rolled at generation — and each Dungeon usually contains several wall regions:
- Brick walls → Blue Armored Bones, Necromancers, Skeleton Commandos, and Paladins — the Paladin’s Hammer and Paladin’s Shield live here.
- Slab walls → Rusty Armored Bones, Ragged Casters, Skeleton Snipers, Giant Cursed Skulls — Spectre Staves, Rifle Scopes, and Sniper Rifles.
- Tiled walls → Hell Armored Bones, Diabolists, Tactical Skeletons, Giant Cursed Skulls — Inferno Forks and Tactical Shotguns.
Bone Lees (Tabi and Black Belt drops) and plain Cursed Skulls appear on every wall type. Post-Plantera kills can also spawn a Dungeon Spirit whenever a high-HP enemy dies — the spirits drop Ectoplasm, the material behind Spectre armor, Pumpkin Moon gear upgrades, and the last tier of magic builds. And once Golem falls, four Cultists start praying at the entrance each day — the trigger for the Lunatic Cultist → Celestial Pillars → Moon Lord chain. If you’re prepping for that endgame, our boss order guide maps the full sequence.
Practical tips
- Farm keys passively — enemy drops make Golden Keys the least of your problems; spend time on chests, not farming.
- Water Bolt hunting: scan shelves with your cursor; the tell is a blue book with a yellow stripe among the ordinary brown ones.
- Dart traps and cracked bricks: carry a Dangersense Potion or wire cutters — cracked floor sections hide spike rooms and pit traps.
- The Surface “annex” counts as safe — the entrance building and first couple screens of depth stay above the Guardian threshold, so you can loot the upper rooms even before Skeletron if you’re careful.
