Skeletron Guide: How to Beat the Dungeon Guardian Boss (1.4.5)

FAQ

What happens if you don't kill Skeletron before morning?
At dawn Skeletron's damage and defense jump to 9999 — it becomes effectively a Dungeon Guardian and kills you instantly. The fight must be finished during the night it was summoned.
Can you enter the Dungeon without killing Skeletron?
No. Dropping below the entrance spawns Dungeon Guardians that deal massive damage and kill any pre-Hardmode player in one hit. Killing a guardian does not unlock the Dungeon — only Skeletron's death does.
What does Skeletron drop in Expert mode?
The Treasure Bag always contains the Bone Glove, a throwing weapon that uses bones as ammo, plus one of three vanity drops (Mask, Skeletron Hand, or Book of Skulls) and gold.

How do you summon Skeletron?

Talk to the Old Man standing at the Dungeon entrance at night and pick Curse — the curse kills him and Skeletron spawns immediately. Once Skeletron is defeated, the Old Man is freed and respawns as the Clothier, a normal town NPC who can move into a house. The resummon option afterward is the Clothier Voodoo Doll: equip it as an accessory, kill the Clothier at night, and Skeletron rises again.

There is a hard time limit. The fight must end before dawn — at 4:30 AM Skeletron transforms into a Dungeon Guardian state with 9,999 damage and 9,999 defense and headbutts you for an instant kill. Start the fight early in the night; do not summon at 3 AM.

What are Skeletron’s stats and how does the fight work?

Skeletron is a floating skull (NPC ID 35) plus two hands. Only the head has to die — but in Classic the hands are worth breaking anyway since they swipe independently. In Expert and Master the calculation flips: the head gains +25 defense per living hand, so killing both hands first is nearly mandatory, and its skull projectiles (68/102 damage) plus the Bleeding and Slow debuffs punish sloppy dodges.

Stat Classic Expert Master
Head HP 4,400 8,800 11,220
Head defense 10 10 (+25 per living hand) 10 (+25 per living hand)
While spinning Defense drops to 0 / −10 Same, plus faster spin Same
Daytime 9,999 damage, 9,999 defense — instant kill

The head’s signature attack is the spinning charge — when it spins, its defense drops to 0 (Classic) or −10 (Expert/Master). That is your damage window: burst hard during every spin instead of chipping between them. A platform arena above the Dungeon roofline with a grappling hook makes the hands easy to kite.

What does Skeletron drop?

Drop Chance Notes
Healing Potion ×5–15 100% —
Skeletron Mask 14.29% Vanity
Skeletron Hand 12.24% Vanity hook
Book of Skulls 10.5% Magic weapon
Skeletron Trophy 10% Decoration
Chippy’s Couch 14.29% Furniture
Treasure Bag Expert+ Bone Glove 100% + one of Mask/Hand/Book (33% each)
Possessed Skull Master 25% Pet
Skeletron Relic Master 100% Trophy
Hellforge 100% if none placed Skyblock progression patch

The Hellforge conditional drop matters on the Skyblock seed: if the world has no placed forge, Skeletron hands you one — part of the 1.4.5 patch that makes sky islands fully completable.

What does beating Skeletron unlock?

Everything. The Dungeon opens for safe exploration — no more one-shot Guardians below the surface line — giving you the Muramasa, Cobalt Shield, Water Bolt, and the Mechanic/Goblin-adjacent rescues. It is the last mandatory stop before the Wall of Flesh in the boss order, and the loot inside directly prepares you for it.
