FAQ

Where do you find the Goblin Tinkerer?
In the Cavern layer after a Goblin Army is defeated — he spawns as the Bound Goblin near your position like an enemy would. Listen for hurt sounds, carry a Lifeform Analyzer, and talk to him once to free him permanently.
Where is the Mechanic in Terraria?
Inside the Dungeon, bound and guarded — she spawns in the depths after Skeletron opens the way. She's essential: wrenches, wires, actuators, and timers all come from her shop.
How do you get the Tax Collector?
Find a Tortured Soul — a rare Underworld enemy in Hardmode — and hit it with Purification Powder (the Dryad sells it). It transforms into the Tax Collector, who passively earns you 50 copper per NPC per real-time minute.
Do bound NPCs respawn if I miss them?
Yes — unrescued NPCs keep spawning in their biomes like enemies do, so walking away and coming back works. Once freed, they're permanent residents who respawn at dawn in their houses if killed.
What's the fastest way to hunt bound NPCs?
Equip a Lifeform Analyzer (Traveling Merchant stock) — it pings bound NPCs on the HUD by name. Combine that with a Hunter Potion (bound NPCs glow through walls) and sweep the Cavern layer, Dungeon, and Spider Nests in one pass.

The eight rescues

Most town NPCs appear when conditions are met — but eight must be physically found in the world and freed. They spawn bound, sleeping, or disguised as enemies in specific biomes, and they keep re-rolling spawns until you talk to them. The full rescue list:

NPC Found as Where Prerequisite
Angler Sleeping Angler Ocean biome (surface, on the beach) None — earliest rescue
Golfer Bound Golfer Underground Desert None
Tavernkeep Unconscious Man Anywhere (surface or underground) Eater of Worlds / Brain of Cthulhu defeated
Stylist Bound Stylist Spider Nest (underground) None
Goblin Tinkerer Bound Goblin Cavern layer Goblin Army defeated
Mechanic Bound Mechanic Dungeon depths Skeletron defeated
Wizard Bound Wizard Cavern layer Hardmode active
Tax Collector Tortured Soul → purified The Underworld Hardmode + Purification Powder from the Dryad

Rescued NPCs move into the next free valid house at dawn — and if killed afterward, they respawn like any town NPC.

The hunting kit

  • Lifeform Analyzer (Traveling Merchant stock) — the definitive tool: bound NPCs appear as named pings on the HUD before they’re on screen.
  • Hunter Potion — bound NPCs glow through terrain. A Hunter Potion plus Lifeform Analyzer sweep of the Cavern layer finds the Goblin Tinkerer and Wizard in one pass.
  • Hurt sounds — bound NPCs audibly grunt when enemies hit them; the Mechanic’s cries echoing through the Dungeon are a famous tell.
  • World size matters — the rescue spawn radii are generous, but the Cavern layer is big. Bring speed gear and work in spirals.

Why the rescues matter

Every bound NPC is load-bearing:

  • The Goblin Tinkerer unlocks reforging and the Tinkerer’s Workshop — the station behind every combined accessory, including the Terraspark Boots and Ankh Shield.
  • The Mechanic is your wire supplier — teleporters, traps, actuators, all arenas.
  • The Tavernkeep is the entire Old One’s Army event, sentry gear included.
  • The Stylist and Wizard are vanity and magic-crystal vendors respectively; the Wizard sells the Ice Rod and Crystal Ball.
  • The Tax Collector mints passive income — 50 copper per resident per minute, which adds up on a staffed world.
  • The Angler is your entire fishing quest pipeline.

Rescue sweep order

For a new world the efficient sequence is: Angler on your first beach visit → Golfer when you crack the Underground Desert → Tavernkeep after your evil boss → Stylist on a spider-cavern detour → Goblin Tinkerer immediately after your first Goblin Army → Mechanic on your first real Dungeon dive → Wizard at the start of Hardmode → Tax Collector the first time a Tortured Soul crosses your Underworld runs.

One house kept permanently vacant in town is the quality-of-life trick — rescues slot into it instantly without a midnight wait.
