FAQ

How big does a fishing pond need to be in Terraria?
At least 75 connected liquid tiles for the bobber to work at all, and 300+ for no Fishing Power penalty. Oceans need 1,001 tiles (they always qualify). Honey counts each tile at 1.5×, so the honey numbers drop to 50 minimum and 200 optimal — lava follows the same 75/300 rules as water.
How do you fish in lava?
You need one of three things: the Hotline Fishing Hook (a Hardmode Angler quest reward), the Lavaproof Fishing Hook (from Hellstone-tier obsidian fishing crates), or lava-critter bait — Magma Snails, Lavaflies, or Hell Butterflies caught with a Lavaproof Bug Net. Any one works; stacking sources speeds up bites.
What is Fishing Power and how do you raise it?
Fishing Power sums your rod power, bait power, and lake size, then multiplies by time-of-day, weather, moon phase, and gear bonuses. Stack the Angler set pieces, Angler Tackle Bag + Lavaproof Tackle Bag (+30 combined), Gummy Worm's permanent +3, sitting on a chair or toilet (+5), Chum Buckets (+11/+17/+20), and fish during rain or a Blood Moon for peak results.
What can you get from fishing crates?
Crates substitute for mining — they roll ores, bars, coins, potions, and biome chest loot. Standouts: Falcon Blade, Sailfish Boots, Tsunami in a Bottle, and the Enchanted Sundial; Hardmode crates can replace your entire ore grind by dropping Hardmode ores and bars.
How do Angler quests work?
Talk to the Angler each day — the quest resets at 4:30 AM — and he'll name a specific quest fish catchable in one biome/depth. Catch it, turn it in for rewards: the Golden Fishing Rod (after 30 quests), Fish Finder components, tackle gear, and more. You don't need to take the quest before catching the fish.

How does fishing work?

Equip a fishing pole, carry bait, click at any body of liquid, and wait for the bobber to dip — press again to reel in. Simple in practice; the depth is in the math.

Three liquids accept lines: water (everywhere), honey (Jungle hives), and lava (with restrictions — below). The system tracks “connected liquid tiles,” and where you can fish is dictated entirely by lake size:

  • Water / lava: 75 tiles minimum for any catch, 300+ tiles for zero penalty — lakes under 300 lose Fishing Power proportionally.
  • Oceans: always fine — they demand 1,001 connected tiles but always exceed it.
  • Honey: each tile counts at 1.5×, so the honey numbers are 50 minimum / 200 optimal.

A 1-tile-wide, 75-deep hole is perfectly legal — pond width is measured across the top row, then depth straight down. Width that widens below the surface doesn’t count, so dig wide pools, not funnels.

Fishing Power — where the numbers come from

Fishing Power decides both bite speed and loot quality. The formula is additive then multiplicative:

Base (additive): rod power + bait power + lake-size factor + flat bonuses — Angler armor pieces (+5 each), Angler Tackle Bag / Lavaproof Tackle Bag / Angler Earring (stacking, up to +30 combined), chair/toilet sitting (+5), Chum Bucket placement (+11/+17/+20 for 1/2/3 buckets), the permanent +3 from a Gummy Worm, and the Blood Moon’s 1.1× multiplier.

Multipliers: time of day (dawn/dusk peak ~1.3×), weather (rain +20%, cloudy +10%), moon phase (full moon best, new moon worst), and lake-size penalty if under 300 tiles.

Practical result: the difference between a casual pole-on-a-pond (say 30 power) and a geared Blood-Moon rain setup (150+) is several times the bite rate and dramatically better catches — crates, quest fish, and rare drops instead of bass and trash.

Lava fishing

Lava refuses normal bait. Three doors in, and stacking them speeds bites:

  1. Hotline Fishing Hook — Angler quest reward from Hardmode quests; the classic answer.
  2. Lavaproof Fishing Hook — fished from Hellstone/Obsidian crates (which you get from… lava; chicken-and-egg solved by option 3).
  3. Lava-critter bait — Magma Snails, Lavaflies, and Hell Butterflies, caught with a Lavaproof Bug Net (a Hellstone-tier anvil craft).

Lava tables are small but valuable: Obsidian Swordfish, Obsidifish, Flarefin Koi, lava crates with their own chest-loot table, and — with the right gear — it’s a self-sustaining source of the materials our Terraspark Boots guide needs.

What fishing actually feeds

  • The Angler’s quests — daily quest fish, biome-and-depth specific, reset at 4:30 AM. Rewards ramp to the Golden Fishing Rod, Fish Finder parts (needed for the Cell Phone chain), tackle bags, and potion ingredients — plus the quest-fish inventory trick (stash the caught fish to stockpile duplicates).
  • Crates — fished crates replace mining entirely; Hardmode crates roll the same Hardmode ores that breaking Altars would seed, which lets careful players skip altar-smashing altogether.
  • Boss summons — Duke Fishron is summoned by fishing with a Truffle Worm at the ocean — that’s the entire mechanic.
  • Blood Moon catches — during a Blood Moon, bites can surface hostile fishing enemies with exclusive loot, and your Fishing Power gets a 10% event bonus.
  • Food and potions — cooked fish are one of the better food sources; Mana/Healing potion fish are a passive income stream.

Practical setup

  1. Dig or find a 300+ tile water pool with flat edges — walk out to the middle so the bobber lands over max depth.
  2. Build a fishing hut over it: chair, bed (spawn point), storage, and a one-block lip over the water for weather safety.
  3. Stock Sonar Potions to skip trash catches and Crate Potions when farming crates; use Fishing Potions during quests.
  4. Fish the event days: rain multiplies power, Blood Moon adds the unique table, and dawn/dusk peaks (4:30–6 AM and 6–7:30 PM, ×1.3) make scheduled fishing sessions meaningfully better.
  5. Equip a High Test Fishing Line / Tackle Bag early — without one, 1 in 7 reel-ins snaps the line and forfeits the catch.
