What is the Goblin Army?
The Goblin Army (also called the Goblin Invasion) is Terraria’s first real “invasion” event — a marching force of goblins that spawns at one world edge and advances on your world spawn point until it’s defeated. It’s the event the game uses to teach you what invasions are, and clearing it once is effectively mandatory: it’s the unlock for the Goblin Tinkerer, the NPC behind reforging and the Tinkerer’s Workshop.
How does it start?
Two ways:
- Random dawn roll: once at least one player has 200+ max HP and no other invasion is active, each dawn (4:30 AM) rolls — a 1/3 chance if the Goblin Army has never been defeated in that world, then 1/30 per dawn in pre-Hardmode and 1/60 in Hardmode after the first clear. On average that’s roughly one random invasion every 12 real hours of play.
- Manual summon: craft a Goblin Battle Standard at a Loom from 10 Tattered Cloth + 5 Wood. Tattered Cloth drops from Goblin Scouts, which only spawn in the east and west sixths of the map — farm the beaches. Using the standard fails silently if nobody has 200 HP or an invasion is already running.
Once it begins, the message tells you which side it’s arriving from; the army walks to the spawn point and the event proper starts when it gets there.
Kill count and waves
The event ends after killing 80 + 40 × eligible players goblins — 120 solo, 200 for three players, up to a theoretical 10,280 on a full server. A progress bar tracks it. The roster includes:
- Goblin Peons / Thieves / Warriors — melee fodder.
- Goblin Sorcerers — teleporting casters; priority targets.
- Goblin Archers — ranged harassers.
- Goblin Summoner (Hardmode only) — a miniboss with Shadowflame orbs and summoned imps; the reason the event stays relevant.
Notable drops beyond the Shadowflame set: the Harpoon, Spiky Balls (the Demolitionist’s ammo source), and in Hardmode the Shadowflame Apparition accessory.
Why the Tinkerer matters
After your first clear, the Goblin Tinkerer begins spawning as the Bound Goblin in the Cavern layer — the same layer where you find the Mechanic and Wizard, which is why our bound NPCs guide suggests doing all rescues in one sweep. Free him and he sells:
- Tinkerer’s Workshop — the station that combines accessories (it’s what makes the Ankh Shield and Terraspark Boots possible).
- Reforge — reroll any weapon/accessory modifier for coins; min-maxing builds starts here.
- Rocket Boots, Ruler, Toolbelt, and other utility items.
Arena advice
Fight it at your spawn town — the enemies path toward you anyway, NPCs shoot back, and housing walls funnel the waves. In Hardmode, spawn it on demand with a Battle Standard and farm Goblin Summoners: the Shadowflame Knife and Shadowflame Hex Doll punch well above their weight for the early Hardmode window. If the army shows up before you’re ready, remember it only threatens the area around the invasion — retreating underground waits it out, but the town pays the price.
