The Hardmode invasion lineup
Pre-Hardmode has one army: the Goblin Army. Hardmode stacks three more invasions on top plus two summonable “moon” marathons — and each one drops loot that normal enemies never will. Here’s the full roster.
| Event | Trigger | Required kills | Signature loot |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pirate Invasion | Dawn roll in Hardmode (gated behind the Goblin check), or Pirate Map (ocean enemy drop) | 120 + 60×players | Cutlass, Lucky Coin → Coin Gun wealth loop, Pirate Staff, Discount Card, unlocks Pirate NPC |
| Frost Legion | Snow Globe (Hardmode drop from Christmas Presents, usable in any world) | 80 + 40×players | Snow Block drops, unlocks Santa Claus during Christmas season |
| Martian Madness | Martian Probe escapes after Golem | 160 + 40×players | Xenopopper, Influx Waver, Cosmic Car Key (infinite flight mount!), Laser Machinegun |
| Pumpkin Moon | Pumpkin Moon Medallion at night (post-Plantera materials) | 20 scoring waves | The Horseman’s Blade, Raven Staff, Spooky armor, Candy Corn Rifle, Jack ’O Lantern Launcher |
| Frost Moon | Naughty Present at night (post-Plantera materials) | 20 scoring waves | Elf Melter, Chain Gun, Blizzard Staff, Snowman Cannon, North Pole, Baby Grinch |
Pirate Invasion
Pirates behave like goblins with better loot and a steeper bill: the invasion spawns at a world edge and marches on spawn, the kill requirement is 120 + 60×players (the Goblin Army’s 80 + 40 looks gentle by comparison), and Pirate Maps — dropped by anything killed in the Ocean biome during Hardmode — summon it manually. The random dawn roll needs the world in Hardmode plus the Goblin check failing first. Defeating it unlocks the Pirate NPC — seller of the Cannon and pirate furniture (full roster and move-in conditions in our NPC list). The Discount Card (20% price cut) and Lucky Coin (money drops on hits — pair with the Coin Gun for the wealth loop) are the standouts, plus the Cutlass, a legendary-feeling melee sword for early Hardmode.
Martian Madness
After Golem dies, Martian Probes start appearing in the outer thirds of the map (most commonly in the Space layer). The probe scans you; if it escapes upward, the event begins — “Martians are invading!” — and UFOs flood the sky. Kill count runs 160 + 40×players, and Martian Saucers only spawn once the progress bar passes 30%.
The saucer is the whole point: it drops the Cosmic Car Key — the infinite-flight UFO mount, and one of the best traversal items in the game — plus the Xenopopper, Influx Waver, Laser Machinegun, Electrostatic Launcher, and the Charged Blaster Cannon. Pro-tip: deliberately let the probe escape; you can trigger Madness on demand any time you’re near space.
The moon events — Terraria’s hardest waves
The Pumpkin Moon and Frost Moon are a matched pair: summon them at night with their medallions, then survive 20 scoring waves until 4:30 AM. Waves advance by kill score, not time — Expert worlds get a 2× multiplier, Master 2.5×. Reaching wave 15 earns the achievement and, at dawn, enables the matching holiday’s effects for a full day.
- Pumpkin Moon (easier): Scarecrows and Splinterlings early, Mourning Wood and Pumpking as the boss waves — guaranteed trophies on the final wave. Boss loot chances gate by wave: ~11% when bosses first appear, up to 100% by wave 20 (wave 12 in Expert). The Raven Staff and Horseman’s Blade are the classic pickup; 3410 points to wave 15, 10160 to clear.
- Frost Moon (harder): Present Mimics can appear in any wave; Everscream → Santa-NK1 → Ice Queen escalate through the late waves. Ice Queen is the fast flying boss at the top; the Chain Gun, Blizzard Staff, and Snowman Cannon are the headline drops. Its gating curve is harsher: ~11% from wave 4 up to just 33% by wave 19 — but Expert reaches 100% by wave 14, and final-wave Everscreams, Santa-NK1s, and Ice Queens drop guaranteed trophies.
Both events want the same setup: a wide flat arena, campfire/heart lantern network, battle potion, and the strongest multi-target damage you own. Summoners shine — a field of sentries from the Old One’s Army does heavy work.
