Terraria Class Setups: Best Gear for Every Stage (1.4.5)

FAQ

Which class is best in Terraria?
Melee is the most forgiving for a first run — highest defense, simple controls, and the endgame ceiling is the Zenith. Ranged is the most consistent boss DPS. Summoner is the weakest early and strongest late. Magic sits between, high damage with mana management.
When should I pick a class?
You can stay classless through all of pre-Hardmode — armor specialization only matters once you hit Hardmode and the ore sets split (e.g., Palladium vs Cobalt vs Orichalcum/Mythril/Titanium paths). Commit when you craft your first Hardmode armor set.
Do I have to stick to one class?
No — hybrid loadouts (a summon plus a gun) work fine outside strict boss DPS checks. The emblem and armor choices below assume a main class; dipping into a second damage type is normal Terraria play.

How do the four classes differ?

Class Identity Signature stage
Melee Highest defense, close-quarters, endgame ceiling is the Zenith Solid from start to finish
Ranged Steady boss DPS, ammo management, safest positioning Strongest mid-game
Magic Burst damage, mana economy, crowd control Spikes with weapon unlocks
Summoner Minions fight while you dodge; weakest early, strongest utility late Transforms at Hardmode

What should I wear at each progression stage?

Pre-boss / pre-Eye of Cthulhu

Class Armor Weapons Accessories
Melee Gold/Platinum or Iron Enchanted Sword, Starfury, Blade of Grass Hermes Boots, Cloud in a Bottle
Ranged Gold/Platinum Gold/Platinum Bow + Flaming Arrows, Minishark Band of Regeneration
Magic Jungle or Meteor Gem Staff, Vilethorn (Corruption) Mana Regeneration Band
Summoner — (stay classless) Finch Staff, Snapthorn whip Fledgling-tier mobility

Post-evil boss / pre-Skeletron

Class Armor Weapons
Melee Shadow or Crimson armor Night’s Edge (crafted at an altar from the four biome swords)
Ranged Necro armor (Dungeon bones) Minishark, Hellwing Bow
Magic Jungle or Meteor Water Bolt (Dungeon), Demon Scythe
Summoner Obsidian or Bee armor Imp Staff, Beekeeper-adjacent drops

Pre-Hardmode peak (for the Wall of Flesh)

Molten armor for melee, Necro for ranged, Jungle/Meteor for magic, Bee/Obsidian for summoner — plus whatever accessory stack your build needs. The Wall of Flesh fight rewards reach: Beenades and the Minishark outperform most swords here.

Early Hardmode (post-Wall, mech bosses)

Break altars with the Pwnhammer and climb the Hardmode ore ladder: Palladium/Cobalt → Orichalcum/Mythril → Titanium/Adamantite. Each set has a melee/ranged/magic headpiece; summoners skip ahead to Spider armor (Spider Staff + Queen Spider Staff) or stay in their best mixed set. Farm Plantera wearing Hallowed or Chlorophyte armor.

Endgame (Cultist → Moon Lord → beyond)

Class Final set Final weapon Made from
Melee Solar Flare Zenith Luminite + Solar Fragments
Ranged Vortex Celebration Mk2, S.D.M.G. Luminite + Vortex Fragments
Magic Nebula Last Prism, Lunar Flare Luminite + Nebula Fragments
Summoner Stardust Terraprisma (daytime Empress), Stardust Dragon Luminite + Stardust Fragments

All four endgame sets come from Luminite — the Moon Lord’s signature drop — combined with the fragment type matching your class’s Celestial Pillar. The boss order page shows where each gear tier sits on the progression line.
