FAQ

How many NPCs do you need for Eye of Cthulhu to spawn?
Four town NPCs under current 1.4.5 rules (older versions required three). The Old Man, Traveling Merchant, and town pets count toward the total; the Skeleton Merchant does not.
What time does the Eye of Cthulhu spawn?
The eligibility check runs at dusk (7:30 PM); if it passes, there is a 1-in-3 chance the boss spawns about 81 seconds into the night. A Suspicious Looking Eye can summon it manually any time between 7:30 PM and 4:30 AM.
Can the Eye of Cthulhu spawn twice?
No — once defeated, it stops spawning naturally in that world, unless no Demon or Crimson Altars are placed in the world (the Skyblock fallback condition) or the world runs For the Worthy or The Constant seeds.

How do you spawn the Eye of Cthulhu?

Two ways. Manually: use a Suspicious Looking Eye — crafted from 6 Lenses at a Demon or Crimson Altar — any time between 7:30 PM and 4:30 AM. Only one can be summoned manually at a time.

Naturally: at dusk the game checks five conditions — the Eye has not been defeated in this world or no altar is placed anywhere (a 1.4.5 addition for Skyblock worlds), at least one player has 200+ max health and 11+ defense, at least four town NPCs are present, no boss is alive, and no Lantern Night, Old One’s Army, Pumpkin Moon, or Frost Moon is running. Pass all five and there is a 1/3 roll; on success the message “You feel an evil presence watching you…” appears and the boss arrives about 81 seconds later — but only if a player is on the surface or in Space when the countdown ends. Staying underground all night is a reliable way to skip it. On the Skyblock seed the nightly chance drops to 1/10.

What are the Eye of Cthulhu’s stats and phases?

Phase 1 runs a simple loop: hover above you, spawn 3–4 Servants of Cthulhu (kill them — they drop Hearts and Stars), then three horizontal charges. It passes through blocks, so platforms and vertical mobility decide the fight, not walls.

At 50% health (65% in Expert/Master) it sheds its iris into a mouth and enters Phase 2: faster, more aggressive charges, zero defense, and no more servants. In Expert and Master it gains a rapid chain-dash that fires more often as its HP falls — below about 4% health it dashes almost nonstop, and its defense drops to −15 then −30, so burn it fast before the dashes become unreadable.

What does the Eye of Cthulhu drop?

Drop Chance Notes
Unholy Arrow ×20–50 100% Strong early bow ammo
Demonite / Crimtane Ore ×30–90 100% Matches world evil
Corrupt / Crimson Seeds ×1–3 100% Matches world evil
Lesser Healing Potion ×5–15 100% —
Eye of Cthulhu Mask 14.29% Vanity
Eye of Cthulhu Trophy 10% Decoration
Binoculars 2.5% (3.33% Expert) Zoom tool
Treasure Bag Expert+ Shield of Cthulhu (100%) + gold
Relic + 0x33’s Aviators Master 100% Trophy + vanity shades
Suspicious Grinning Eye Master 25% Pet

Two special cases: beating it the same day you kill the Wall of Flesh awards Badger’s Hat, and if the world has no altar placed at all it drops a Demon/Crimson Altar — the 1.4.5 Skyblock progression patch. The ore payout is the real prize: 30–90 Demonite or Crimtane per kill funds your first real weapon, which is why this boss anchors the early line in our boss order.

What should you prepare before fighting it?

A long platform runway (~150 tiles) with campfires, Hermes Boots or better for sprinting, and a weapon that hits a moving target — a bow with Flaming Arrows, a thrown weapon, or the Starfury. Shurikens and grenades work on Classic. Full gold or platinum armor is comfortable; iron is doable. If you are brand new, the beginner guide walks through the first-night setup that gets you to 200 HP in the first place.
