FAQ

What happens when Hardmode starts in Terraria?
The moment the Wall of Flesh dies, the world converts permanently: a V-shaped pair of stripes generates from sky to Underworld — one Hallow, one matching your world evil — biome spread accelerates hard, enemies gain new stats and spawn tables, and the Pwnhammer unlocks altar-breaking for Hardmode ores.
Should I break demon altars in Hardmode?
It's the fastest ore route — each broken altar spawns Hardmode ore (Cobalt/Palladium → Mythril/Orichalcum → Adamantite/Titanium in descending order of quality). The costs: each smash has a chance to seed one random corrupted block somewhere in the world and a chance to spawn a Wraith. Fishing Hardmode crates is the slower, purist-safe alternative.
What gear do you need for early Hardmode?
A Hardmode pickaxe (Molten is the floor, Cobalt/Palladium mines the next tier), wings (farm Wyverns for Souls of Flight — there is no vendor shortcut early), and a fresh armor set — Cobalt through Adamantite/Titanium — before the mechanical bosses. A Daedalus Stormbow with Holy Arrows is the famous early-Hardmode equalizer.
How do you stop Corruption spreading in Hardmode?
Dig quarantine trenches at least 3 tiles wide (wider or block-lined is safer against thorny bridges), prioritize the Jungle (mud converts to plain dirt permanently), and expect the post-Plantera slowdown to halve spread speed. The Steampunker's Clentaminator mass-cleanses anything the trenches miss.
What order do you fight the Hardmode bosses?
Optional Queen Slime first, then any order for the Destroyer/Twins/Skeletron Prime (Destroyer first is the classic pick), then Plantera → Golem → optional Duke Fishron/Empress of Light → Lunatic Cultist → Celestial Pillars → Moon Lord. Our boss order guide maps every gate.

Welcome to Hardmode

The Wall of Flesh doesn’t end Terraria — it ends the tutorial. The moment it dies, the world permanently converts: a giant V carves through the map from sky to Underworld, one stripe turning into the Hallow, the other into a fresh copy of your world evil (Corruption or Crimson). Enemy stats jump, new spawn tables load, and the item economy restarts at the bottom.

The first night of Hardmode punishes players who walk out unprepared — Wraiths, Possessed Armor, and Wandering Eyes are tuned for endgame-pre-Hardmode gear. Don’t panic; the ladder back is deterministic.

The Hardmode checklist

  1. Quarantine what you love. The V stripes plus accelerated biome spread will eat your town and jungle if ignored. Dig the trenches now, while you still remember where things are.
  2. Break Altars. The Wall of Flesh drops the Pwnhammer — the first hammer with the power to destroy Demon/Crimson Altars. Each altar broken seeds the world with the next tier of Hardmode ore (Cobalt/Palladium → Mythril/Orichalcum → Adamantite/Titanium) — with a chance of also spawning one corrupted block somewhere random and a chance of spawning a Wraith. Most players smash 6–12 altars and stop.
  3. Rebuild the tool chain. Cobalt/Palladium pickaxe → Mythril/Orichalcum anvil + pickaxe → Adamantite/Titanium forge + pickaxe. Each tier mines the next; plan the hop.
  4. Get wings. Souls of Flight drop from Space-layer Wyverns — early Hardmode has no vendor shortcut, so build a high platform and farm them. See the wings guide for the full ladder.
  5. Gear for the mechs. Hardmode ore armor, a Daedalus Stormbow (Hallow mimic drop) with Holy Arrows, or Onyx Blaster/Sky Fracture-tier weapons — whatever your class, have a boss-grade loadout before summoning. The class setups guide has the per-class breakdowns.
  6. Pick your fights. The Destroyer is the classic first mechanical boss — Wyvern-souled stormbow builds melt its segments. The Twins and Prime are tuned harder; bring the arena.

What actually changes under the hood

  • New spawn tables everywhere — pre-Hardmode enemies largely retire; Underground gives way to Armored Skeletons, biome Mimics (Hallowed Mimics drop the Daedalus Stormbow), and biome-specific threats.
  • The evil biomes accelerate — spread speed in Hardmode dwarfs the pre-Hardmode crawl, and the Jungle is uniquely vulnerable (mud converts to dirt permanently — Chlorophyte farms included, protect them).
  • New materials unlock: Souls of Light/Night (Hallow/evil underground kills), Souls of Flight, Crystal Shards, Chlorophyte ore in the Jungle, Ectoplasm in the post-Plantera Dungeon.
  • The Underground Hallow spawns Gelatin Crystals — the Queen Slime summon.
  • Chest economy upgrades: Hardmode crates roll Hardmode ores and bars — a dedicated fishing loop can skip altar-breaking entirely.

The Hardmode boss ladder

Queen Slime (optional, early Hardmode) → the Destroyer, the Twins, Skeletron Prime (any order) → Plantera (the world-scale gate — kills her and the Dungeon upgrades, spread halves) → Golem → optional Duke Fishron and Empress of Light → Lunatic Cultist (Dungeon entrance, post-Golem cultists) → Celestial Pillars → Moon Lord.

Each gate unlocks the next tier — and the chain of events beyond Plantera is covered in our Hardmode invasions and boss order guides.
